Startchy is a Lebanese-American company that creates an all-natural, edible coating solution that can be applied to perishables like fruits and vegetables. The solution slows ripening and moisture loss and has an antibacterial and antioxidant effect. Made from all-natural ingredients, the solution has multiple uses including an alternative to wax and can be applied using industry-standard coating equipment. Startchy has been testing its solution extensively, recently finishing a successful pilot with a major US producer of apples and pears.

Startchy is an alumni of FoodTrack by Maersk, an intensive venture programme dedicated to exploring new ideas and partnerships for solutions addressing the problem of food loss in the global supply chain. Out of 142 applications, Startchy was selected as one of the seven participating startups, spending four weeks Copenhagen at the end of 2018. The programme consists of workshops, tailored speed-meeting events and spending time with experts at Maersk, allowing startups to further develop their solutions and for the parties to assess compatibility between the individual startups and Maersk Growth.

The investment enables Startchy to access the global network of Maersk, the world’s largest transporter of food, and the expertise of Döhler, a global ingredient company in the food and beverages industry. Maersk Growth is excited to support and accompany Startchy on its journey in scaling its operations and further developing its technology.
